MBTiles files with multiple zoom levels

I am currently using mbtileswrite() to generate MBTiles files from various GIS layers. I would like to be able to include multiple resolutions within the same file to represent multiple zoom levels; however, the function appears to only accept a single set of datapoints/georeferences and cannot append to an existing file. Is there any way to accomplish this using the mbtileswrite function or related ones?
