Why do I receive the error "Invalid Platform. This installer runs only on macOS Apple silicon platforms," when trying to install MATLAB on macOS?

When trying to install MATLAB on macOS,  I receive the error, "Invalid Platform. This installer runs only on macOS Apple silicon platforms. To continue, download the installer for the macOS Intel platform." How can I resolve this?

This error indicates that you are attempting to install the Apple Silicon version of MATLAB on an Intel-based Mac. 
To resolve this issue, you will need to download the Intel processor version of the Mac installer.
