fit ellipse on 3D data points

Hi all,

I need to fit an ellipse or circle through 3D data points. Algorithms on the file exchange just fit ellipse/circles on 2D data points, or ellipsoids on 3D data. Does anyone have a clue on how to fit ellipses to 3D data?

Can you just try:

Step 1: Fit a plane to your points.

Step 2: Project your points onto that plane.

Step 3: Use the 2D algorithms listed on the FEX
