i have often seen authors re-size the image they wanna analyse. even though all the images in the data base have standard size(1152x1500) they are re-sized to 560x720(for example). Is there any specific reason for this?

Not really a MATLAB question - but anyway, the reasons probably vary, so it would help if you could give links or references to a couple of the papers you're thinking of.

See the ‘instructions for authors’ section for the respective journals. There are probably size limitations on the figures.

It can be easier to identify boundaries when you have a higher resolution image, so in some cases the point of working with a lower resolution is to prove that your algorithm does not require a high resolution to function well.
