I was successfully running an old version of Matlab (2010a) and tried upgrading to 2015a and 2015b. I am encountering a similar problem to here http://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/answers/178815-issue-running-matlab2014b-and-2015a-on-yosemite
On opening Matlab 2015a or 2015b it starts using a lot of CPU, which increases to 500%. Matlab either spits out a Java memory error or I have to force quit.
It seems like there's an incompatibility between new Matlab versions (2015a and 2015b) and my current java version (1.6.0_65). Does anyone have any insight on how to fix this? Unfortunately I need to run one of the newer Matlab versions, otherwise I'd stick to the old version and avoid this headache!
Update: Per the instructions in the above link, I've switched to java version 1.7.0_60-b19 ('>> version -java Java 1.7.0_60-b19 with Oracle Corporation Java HotSpot™ 64-Bit Server VM mixed mode'). But the problem persists.
Fixed: In case anyone is interested, I fixed this problem by following the instructions here http://au.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/answers/159574-matlab-2014b-on-yosemite-high-cpu
