Major axis of ellipse created from 2d scatterplot

Hi everyone,

I have a 2-d scatter plot in (x,y) coordinates that is shaped like an ellipse. How do I determine the length of the major axis?

How can I find the orientation/major/symmetry axis of a 2D shape from its xy coordinates(which is not an ellipse), then rotate it through this axis. The centroid should also pass through this major axis, if possible. . Any codes will be greatly appreciated.
