Matlab stalls when connecting to serial port

I'm trying to connect MATLAB to a serial device. However, MATLAB keeps 'freezing' when I try to fopen() the connection to the serial device, which results in a 'Busy' MATLAB state. The only thing that works is if I force quit MATLAB and reboot my computer, because MATLAB can't seem to open again after the force quit.
I am running Mac OS X.11.4 with MATLAB R2016a.
Anyone who has run into the same problem?
