digital filter help

Hi,
I am trying to implement a filter to smooth some friction data. I would like there to be as little shift in the time domain as possible. I have been using the filtfilt function, but it matches the initial conditions at t=0 and t=t, and this isn't ideal due to the oscillations/noise in the data. Any recommendations on how to filter without shifting in time, but get more of an average at t=0 and t=t, rather than just match the initial conditions?
