how to read file consisting of unknown number of lines and a variable number of data on each line. each line starts with an identifier like A3, the identifier always is composed of one letter and one integer.

Learn to use the tools in MATLAB. Some that might be useful MIGHT be:
help fopen
help fgets
help fgetl
help fclose
help textread
read the help for those tools, and TRY IT.
