Derivative of one vector w.r.t. other vector?

I have a grey-scale image and I want to get the derivative of intensity of pixels.
My approach will be to get the intensity vector for the corresponding pixel number vector, in MATLAB. I am still confused as to what command will yield the derivative of pixel intensity with respect to the pixel number.
Any help regarding the approach or command will be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
