Synthetic square wave from normal distributions

Hello,
I have a question and hope that you can help me.
We are trying to achieve a homogeneous light distribution on a surface (quadrilateral).
This has to be done using light spots of different sizes that can be moved freely.
Mathematically this comes down to adding normal distributions with different sigmas. The sigmas and their frequency is known before.
Do you know how this could be done? I am not sure if it is possible, but maybe there is an approach similiar to Fourier analysis.
Kind regards,
Joe
