When parpool, gcp, or parfor is called, Matlab creates additional instances, each of which immediately prompts an error as attached.

The error may be a result of the ulimit settings being too low.

To check ulimit, open Terminal and run the following:

>>ulimit -a

If you see that the "max user processes" and "open files" are set to low values (For example, open files (-n) 256, max user processes (-u) 709), please raise those two values to be able to open larger pools. The ulimit command can be used to set these values, run ulimit in Terminal and it will identify which switches to use to make the changes. With the move to El Capitan and newer OS X and macOS you may not have the ability to make these changes due to restrictions in place. Creating plists for each of the settings will allow this however.

Create the following files:

/Library/LaunchDaemons/limit.maxfiles.plist
/Library/LaunchDaemons/limit.maxproc.plist

Content of the files should be as shown bellow:

Have just seen this problem on a large Redhat Linux 7.9 (RHEL7) machine.

parpool('local', 40) was failing - the box has 2 sockets x 32 cores no HT.

The error logs confusingly claim the JVM cannot allocate memory (this is a Tb machine.)

The default Redhat 'maxproc' (soft)limit is 4096 - 'proc' really means threads.

Lifting this to 8092 fixes the problem:

Adding /etc/security/limits.d/21-nproc-override.conf containing

 *     soft  nproc   8092
 root  soft  nproc   unlimited

should increase every user's soft limit (20-nproc.conf could be clobbered by an update.)
