Line thickness using patch

Has anyone ever had problems using the patch function when trying to set a line thickness? It doesn't matter what value I set the line thickness at, the line thickness always stays the same. I'm trying to model water hammer in a pipe system and I want different pipes to have different thicknesses but nothing seems to be working. Anyone have any ideas?

As a work-around, try giving the command

opengl software

The problem does sound familiar as an OpenGL problem affected a small range of releases on one platform, but which platform and which releases is not something I recall at the moment.
