How to compute the orientation of bifurcation and ridge ending?

In the fingerprint recognition, the information (location x,y and orientation(angle), type of minutiae) is stored and used for matching. The location of the minutiae point is the x,y coordinate of the input image. But I do not understand how to compute orientation value. Could any one explain about it.
