Ubuntu: Fatal Internal Error on Startup

I am trying and failing to install a 30 day evaluation copy of Matlab R2017b on Linux Ubuntu 14.04.

The install goes all the way to completion with no warnings or deviations from defaults on my part, but when I try to run from the command line, all I get is:

Fatal Internal Error: std::exception: map::at

What the heck is going on, here?
