Can I use the Matlab engine with a home license?

I have Matlab Home. I have used engOpen and engEvalString in a c/c++ project. The code builds and runs with no reported errors. I gat a pointer to the engine and engEvalString returns zero. Matlab starts and a command window opens but I get nothing else. My goto place is licensing unless there's something I missed?

Can you shrink your code down to the bare minimum that reproduces the problem and post it?
