symbolic error

when i run the example in the help document as

x = cell(3, 10);
for i = 1:10
    for j = 1:3
        x{j,i} = sprintf('x%d%d',i,j);
    end
end
x = x(:); % now x is a 30-by-1 vector
x = sym(x, 'real');

an error is repoted as

??? Error using ==> sym.sym at 164
Error using ==> maplemex
Error, (in assume) invalid arguments

Error in ==> optimalFun at 27
x = sym(x, 'real');

by the way, my m file is named as optimalFun.m

any help are appreciated. thanks a lot1

Notice the reference to "maplemex" in the error message. That indicates that you are using the older Maple based symbolic toolbox. The current Symbolic Toolbox documentation is for MuPAD not for Maple. You need to look at the help documentation for whichever release you are using.

Thank you for your reply. yes, you are right. i restart MATLAB from matlabroot/bin/matlab-sym-matlab.bat it is working now. but, how could i change the variable MATLAB_SYMBOLIC ? thank you

I have not seen any documentation about MATLAB_SYMBOLIC, and it is not clear whether you want to change it to use Maple or to use MuPAD ?
