How to get active fingers by distance transform method?

Sir, I am new to MATLAB and I am currently working on hand gesture recognition using MATLAB..I have detected the hand using skin color detection(YCbCr method).I am currently stuck with how to find the number of active fingers for the binary image which I've got.Would be very thankful if anybody just guides me....
