help with license.dat ... r14sp3

My license manager is retiring the servers that my license.dat file point to for my linux r14sp3 installations. I have to do this on a few machines that are actively doing things in Matlab. What's the best way to update the machines without disruption?
ie. do I edit license.dat to point to the new server? or do I add a license.dat.new file with the new server ip? do I create a network.lic?
Many thanks in advance.

Do the files indicate a host name or a host address ? If they indicate a host name then the easiest way to solve this without disruption is to create and test a new license server, and then when you are ready to switch over, update the DNS server so that the old name is associated with the new address.
I cannot promise that you will not need to restart Matlab to have this take effect, as the new server will not know about the existing license check-outs.

My imperfect recollection from my days as system administrator is that Matlab checks the licenses periodically; I am not certain of that. FlexLM licenses are typically checked out for a time period so that if the program or system doing the checking out crashes then the license manager can release the license by way of timeout.

This is a completely different question. So either open a new thread instead of attaching it to an existing one. Or search in the forum for matching questions. Please note, that Mathworks installation support can help you, while the members of this forum are voluntary Matlab users only.

Contact Mathworks Support for free license and installation assistance. The volunteers who answer questions here do not have access to the license database.

If I understand you correctly, the concern is not related to interactive use, but to running computations.
Interactive use would give end users warnings about the connection to the server is lost in 2 minute increments and you have at least 20 minutes to save results etc.
Running computations shall not be interrupted, but reading about R14SP3, I cannot say for sure. Most organizations I know of inform end users in a way like "We will shut down the license server next week Friday night, please make sure, etc.".
