Can you help me to use the MNIST handwriting database with Matlab

Can you help me to use the MNIST handwriting database with Matlab i need to test an aaplication using its images . I download the database and I use this code that I found in the net (it is functional without fault) but I can not read the pictures or know how to proceed, need your help please !!!!!!!!!!!!
