Does MLEvalString works for scalar evaluation/assignment?

Hello, Please could someone help me knowing more about the topic below ? MLEvalString: On its description page, this function is only used with commands for matrices, but does it work also for commands with scalars (simple assignment of constant values)? Or do we have to pass by a 1x1 matrice?
