Signal analyzer app not starting - new ubuntu 18.04.1 install, new 2018a install. Other symptoms - 'boing' when 'Log in' or 'Get add-ons' are clicked. What am I missing?

I've a fresh 2018a install on a fresh ubuntu 18.04.1 install with many packages intsalled including the signal processing toolbox. The signal analyzer app doesn't start (no window appears). It appears to start, with the spinning wheel but then nothing. The other apps I've tried all seem to start OK and produce a new window. Other symptoms with my install are a 'boing' sound if the 'Log In' button or the 'Get add-ons' buttons are pressed and neither of these buttons result in any action. Any idea what I'm missing with this install? Thanks.
