Load variables directly from model file (*.slx)

While creating and a model, a few variables containing data uploaded from excel where created. Every time I open the model (*.slx) these variables need to be created manually. I noticed that various example models include the variables, which are loaded into the workspace upon loading. What is the practical way of doing this?
