You've probably seen this link a number of times. Why aren't you following its advice? You are wasting time (ours and your own), since you're question is impossible to answer without some clarification about the context.

My guess:
  • Using an ASCII encoding instead of binary
  • Having a ton of geometry
  • Having a ton of redundant geometry
If we assume about 200B per triangle for an ASCII STL, that's still 32.5 million faces. That said, stlwrite() encodes as binary by default, so if we assume about 50B per triangle for a binary STL, that's 130 million faces.
Either way you cut it, that's a lot of geometry. My guess is "all of the above".
