When I attempt to open a .m file by double clicking on it, the file does not open in the editor. Instead, Matlab starts up and the editor has the last program I was working on. If Matlab is open and I attempt to open a file by double clicking on it (the thumbnail on my desktop or in a folder), nothing happens.
Many of the other help threads I look at do not directly apply to me. Many answers point to https://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/answers/93468-why-is-a-new-instance-of-matlab-opened-when-i-double-click-on-a-matlab-file-in-windows-explorer-even#answer_223899 but I don't care if the desired program is opened in a new instance - it's not opening *at all*.
The closest help thread to my situation is https://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/answers/304431-how-to-connect-the-m-files-with-meditor-rather-than-matlab-starter since the default program associated with .m files is "MATLAB Starter Application." However, I cannot reset the default program as suggested.

Actually, the program (found at FEX: file-association-fix) found in the answer from Jan on the https://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/answers/93468-why-is-a-new-instance-of-matlab-opened-when-i-double-click-on-a-matlab-file-in-windows-explorer-even#answer_223899 thread fixed my issue instantly.
