mac 10.14.6 I downloaded R2020a but when I open it - opens a matlab window but then only get spinning disk?

mac OSX 10.14.6 I downloaded R2020a as a staff member at Monash but when I open app it only opens a matlab window and I then only get a spinning disk? I have opened it in Terminal and by double clicking on it in Applications but same result. (Matlab Online works).
