characteristic variables for one transport equation

Hi,

i am a bit confused. Hope someone can help me out. Consider the equation du/dt+a(u)du/dx=0

if you would have to get the characteristic variables. How would you do that. I know it for a system of equations but not for one equation.

The goal would be to provide a numerical no flux boundary.

I appreciate any hint.
