audiowrite does not generally support mp3 (but might depending on the media coders loaded on the individual system)

Well that's a major oversight by MATLAB. You'd think they would support one of the world's most common audio formats.

mp3 had patent issues at the time they dropped mp3, but the patents have expired

As a workaround writing .mp4a works well.
