What is the purpose of inputting an initial guess value in MultiStart?

Why do I need to input an initial guess value, x0, when running MultiStart? It's going to generate k-1 trial points anyways.
Does it impact how the trial points are generated?
Will changing the inputted x0 impact MultiStart results?
