Matlab GUI question regarding pop-up menu

Hello, I am creating GUI that has one pop-up menu. I have trouble getting n-th option that user chooses. For example, if my menu is

 dog
 cat
 tiger
 lion

when I user picks 'cat' from the option and presses pushbotton, I somehow need to obtain number 2, the n-th option under the popup menu.

Is there any way to do this? If there is, please help.
