sample-based audio sampler

Hi All!

I have some question about sample-based audio sampler. I want to program the simplest sampler, but firstly i want to know how is work. Anybody can explain me how is it work? What exactly do it? With what should i start the program? Or somebody can give me any references about it? Any advice would help me.
