Special characters in m-file comments are being removed/replaced

I've noticed that special charactes such as 'Γ' and '│' that I sometimes use in comments in m-files are being removed:

% Compute Pr(Γ(k)│Y(k))

After saving, closing and re-opening the file it becomes:

% Compute Pr?(?(k)?Y(k))

According to my file system, the saved file is

charset=us-ascii

Is there any support for other character encodings (e.g. UTF-8) in the code editor?

I see now there is a recent answer saying as of R2020a, the MATLAB Editor will default to saving new files using UTF-8. So I guess it is not possible before this.

if i remember correctly you can set the format in the matlab settings, already before 2020a. cant check at the moment, but i never had problems with special characters, even before 2020a

I haven't found anything in the Preferences menu (I'm using Mac OS X). But I did find this setting:

>> feature('DefaultCharacterSet')

ans =

'ISO-8859-1'

So is this something I can change?

The methods of chaning it prior to 2020a seem a bit complicated. Maybe I'll just wait until I upgrade to 2020a which I will do soon.
