I get the following warning from scatteredInterpolant
"Warning: Duplicate data points have been detected and removed - corresponding values have been averaged."
Does this mean that the function discovered duplicate (x,y) grid points in my inputs, or that some adjacent z-points are duplicated?
The x,y grid is latitude/longitude. So, the 1st (-180) and last (+180) longitudes could have been duplicated and it is possible that some randomly located z-points can be duplicates.
Should I be concerned about this warning?

Should I be concerned about this warning?
Probably not, unless the result of the interpolation does not correspond the the data plotted (for example) with scatter3, stem3, or other appropriate plots. If there is a significant disparity, then the data need to be examined and corrected to produce an appropriate result.

It means it discovered duplicate (x,y) pairs.
See the Eliminate Duplicate Sample Points section of the documentation page for more.
