Double Prime

I am trying to type double prime for a x label and I cannot make it work. Instead of double prime I get two prime with extra distance.
xlabel('$G^{\prime\prime}$','Interpreter','latex')
I also used other potential symbols like \second and \dprime but did not work. Direct type of it (˝) or $$G''$$ did not work either. I am using a mac and latexit or other tex software produced what I meant correctly!
Furthermore, commands like xlabel('G'' ') also end up to the wrong thing and omit one of the primes!

Wait -- Mac? Which OS-X version? and which MATLAB version?
Somewhere around R2010 there were (if I recall) problems with using LaTex on OS-X .

See http://www.mathworks.com/support/bugreports/249537
which just happened to get mentioned in a different Question this morning.

If it's just a matter of spacing, you could always remove some space between the primes:
xlabel('$G^{\prime\!\prime}$','Interpreter','latex')

xlabel('test''''')
gives you an xlabel as test'' You need double primes in strings for a single prime.

I should maybe have said that I am using R2011a on Windows 7 64-bit.

Wrong, Quotation is different than double prime (or segond), at least in the mac.
