Why do I get an "Assertion failed!" error message on MATLAB startup on Windows?

When starting MATLAB, I get the following Visual Studio error message:
Assertion failed!
Program: ...ogram Files\MATLAB\R2007b\bin\win32\MATLAB.exe

None of the options will allow me to start MATLAB.

This error can occur if the System Fonts have been corrupted. In order for MATLAB to start properly, you will need to identify and repair any corrupted Windows Fonts.
