What is Plugging?
Plugging (also called reverse current braking) involves reversing the phase sequence of the stator supply, which reverses the rotating magnetic field. As a result:
  • The rotor continues to rotate in the original direction.
  • The stator field rotates in the opposite direction.
  • This creates a large slip (> 1), producing a braking torque.
  • The motor slows down rapidly.
🔌 How Plugging is Implemented
  1. Three-phase supply to the motor is altered by swapping two of the supply phases (e.g., L1 and L2).
  2. The motor tries to run in the opposite direction, but because of its inertia, it continues in the original direction.
  3. The induced torque opposes motion — that's your braking torque.
🧯 Important Considerations
  • Plugging results in high current (often 5–7 times the rated current).
  • Always used with a braking resistor or contactor to limit current.
  • Must be stopped before reversal or else the motor will start running in the opposite direction.
  • A zero-speed switch or timer is often used to cut off the supply once the motor stops.
