The purpose of this model is to simulate the back-to-back HVDC modular multilevel converter (MMC) as a power quality conditioning system supplying an entire electrical network. As such, the modular multilevel inverter operates as a remote-end converter, or also called islanded mode.
The main objective of such a power quality conditioning system is to be able to protect sensitive electrical networks against transient voltage dips. This is done by utilizing the internal energy storage of the MMC submodules, together with the rectifier controlling the line current to nominal value during the transient voltage dip. This makes for a very flexible and instantaneous mitigation system. Beyond this, the system also posesses several powerful features such as reactive power compensation, low harmonic distortion, and excellent redundancy.
