How can I use function filter in Matlab?

I need to use filter function in MatLab to choose some values from number of values

The filter function is for signal processing purposes. It cannot ‘choose some values from number of values’.
Please describe what you want to do, preferably with an example.

What would the input to the filter function be? What would the output be?
