The basic operating principle of a DAB converter revolves around phase-shift modulation:
  1. Phase-Shift Control: The two bridges are driven by complementary square-wave pulses. By introducing a phase shift between the pulses of the primary and secondary bridges, the power flow direction and magnitude can be controlled. The leading bridge delivers power to the lagging bridge, creating a voltage differential across the energy transfer inductor
  2. Zero-Voltage Switching (ZVS): This technique is employed to reduce switching losses. ZVS is achieved when the voltage transfer ratio across the transformer is equal to 1, allowing the power devices to switch at zero voltage, thus minimizing energy loss during the switching process
  3. Bidirectional Power Flow: The DAB converter can transfer power in both directions, making it suitable for applications like battery charging and discharging, where energy needs to flow to and from the grid or storage systems
